Education in the Remote Areas of Timor Island: A New Hope for Children in South Central Timor Regency
South Central Timor Regency, located in East Nusa Tenggara Province, is one of the regions facing significant challenges in education. With an arid and barren geographical condition and limited access to resources, the local community has long relied on agriculture as their primary livelihood. The prolonged dry season often makes water a scarce resource, while daily necessities largely depend on crops such as corn, cassava, candlenuts, tamarind, and dried coconut.
However, despite the considerable natural and economic challenges, education in this region has started to show signs of improvement since 2014, thanks to the presence of the Tangan Pengharapan Foundation. By establishing Early Childhood Education Centers (PAUD), the foundation has created new opportunities for children in the area to access education that was previously very limited. These PAUD centers not only provide basic education but also play a crucial role in changing the community’s mindset about the importance of education for their children's future.
The existence of these PAUD centers has become a blessing for the community, shifting the paradigm that education is not merely a privilege for those living in big cities but a right that should be enjoyed by children in remote areas as well. As public awareness of the importance of education continues to grow, it is hoped that more children in South Central Timor Regency will be able to pursue their education and achieve greater aspirations.
However, the challenge of increasing school participation rates in this region remains significant. Strongly upheld customs and traditions sometimes become obstacles for children to continue their education. Many children are forced to drop out of school due to family obligations, such as helping their parents farm or taking care of household needs. This often leads to a preference for more practical work, such as farming, rather than pursuing dreams that require higher education.
The importance of the presence of Feeding and Learning Centers (FLC) in this area cannot be overlooked. In addition to providing access to education, FLCs also offer meals for children who may struggle to receive adequate nutrition at home. Programs like these not only provide knowledge but also introduce children to a broader concept of education, including life skills that they can apply in the future. With the existence of FLCs, the community is beginning to realize that education is not just about schooling but also about empowerment and sustainable improvements in quality of life.
Better education in South Central Timor Regency will not only transform the lives of children but can also bring significant social and economic changes to the community. It is hoped that with the continued development of educational centers such as PAUD and FLCs, the local community will better understand the importance of education as a foundation for achieving a brighter future while also opening up new opportunities to reduce dependence on limited traditional lifestyles.
In this effort, support from various parties—government institutions, non-governmental organizations, and the private sector—is crucial to ensuring that quality education continues to develop in remote areas like South Central Timor Regency. Only through strong collaboration can we build a brighter future for children in the remote areas of Timor Island.
